Michele’s Musings
Dear friends,
This summer has not gone as expected so far. I had dental work postponed into the third week of July because the elevator at my dentist’s office was broken. I don’t do stairs at all. Really it wasn’t that much of an inconvenience to wait (I dislike going anyway) but it meant the appointments fell into a busier time with other things going on. Plus we had two wildfires in our area and a huge waft of smoke invaded our valley just as the heat intensified. Are there really any people that like heat above 30C?
So imagine my surprise when Frithjof said, “Is the Daisy due this weekend?” Turns out it had fallen off Sally’s radar as well.
All this to say that if this issue feels rushed it’s because it was. The only one staying calm was Frithjof. I don’t know how he does that!
We did enjoy the haiku from the newcomers and gave them a serious reading. But I’m sorry if we missed anything else!
All the rushing did inspire this month’s prompt. So, silver linings 😊

The 8th Morioka International Haiku Contest is open for submissions until August 31st.
Haiku Northwest is pleased to announce its 23rd annual Porad Haiku Award. The contest is named for Francine Porad, founder of Haiku Northwest, former president of the Haiku Society of America, and editor for eight years of Brussels Sprout, an international journal of haiku and art. Submission deadline is August 30th.
The Haiku Shack Anthology is a new series curated and edited by Cendrine Marrouat and Sherri J Moye-Dombrosky. Each volume will contain a maximum of 50 haiku selected from contributors living around the world. Submissions for the upcoming issue must be in by September 30th.
A few delightful contest results and summer issues have been released this past month. I don’t have room to mention them all but enjoy the winners of the Heron’s Nest Peggy Willis Lyles awards, the latest issue of the Enchanted Garden and the winners of the #FemkuMag Marlene Mountain Awards! Also, the zen space has a Summer Showcase guest-edited by Daisy friend Jerome Berglund (you might just find a ‘ku by Michele in there).

Michele Rule is a disabled writer from Kelowna BC. She is especially interested in the topics of chronic illness, relationships and nature. Michele is published in the Asahi Shimbun Haikuist, Pine Cone Review, the Enchanted Garden, Five Minute Lit, Shadow Pond, WordCityLit, and the anthologies F*ck the Patriarchy, Chicken Soup for the Soul, and To Live Here, among others. She is an associate member of the League of Canadian Poets and Haiku Canada. Michele has been awarded honourable mention twice for the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival Haiku Invitational and also for the Haiku Northwest Porad Award. Her first chapbook is Around the World in Fifteen Haiku. Michele lives in a beautiful garden surrounded by people who love her just the way she is.
Sally Quon is a disabled poet and photographer living in the Okanagan Valley of beautiful British Columbia, Canada. She is an associate member of The League of Canadian Poets and a member of Haiku Canada. Her work has been published in numerous journals including The Heron’s Nest, Modern Haiku, Frogpond, First Frost, and Time Haiku. She is currently working on her first book of haiku, haibun, and haiga, tentatively titled, “My Valley, My Home.”
