Michele’s Musings

Thank you so much to everyone who sent best wishes for speedy healing for both Frithjof and me. It helped, because I am fully recovered now and Frithjof has moved up to putting a third of his weight on his broken ankle (while wearing the robo-boot). So upward and onward! My writing in general has ground to halt, however. So I’ve been reading this series from called New to Haiku: Advice for Beginners from the Haiku Foundation. It’s a great place to explore a variety of tips and tricks from experienced haikuists. Take a dive in and have fun!

Here is the link.

Our friend in Ontario, David Brydges received this email from the Asahi Haikuist Network:

Dear Haiku Colleague,
The poet emissary of The Ontario Poetry Society, David Brydges, confirmed “poetry is everywhere” even “while putting out the garbage” in front of his home in Cobalt, Ontario.

Sally’s Notebook

We’ve been receiving so many wonderful haiku based on the prompts, it’s been difficult to decide which ones to include. Every so often, there is a haiku that doesn’t make it to the page, but sticks with me, like this one from Necia Campbell for our Lily Issue:

empty lily pads
wither in summer heat
Champlain's freckled skin

Absolutely wonderful, Necia!

To celebrate our 35th issue, Michele and I would like to feature newcomers. If you haven’t had a haiku published in our newsletter, we invite you to submit by September 4. Everyone, of course, is welcome to submit, but for this issue, preference will be given to those voices we haven’t published yet. Please remember to include your location with your submission.

As summer winds down, and autumn begins to show its lovely face, I hope you make the time for at least one more adventure!

This Week’s Prompt

For our Newcomer’s Edition, please send us an autumn haiku, without using the word autumn. Haiku can be sent to sally_quon@yahoo.com or kelownalady@hotmail.com. As mentioned in Sally’s Notebook, everyone is welcome to submit, but preference will be given to newcomers. Remember, Member Spotlight invitations can only be extended to you if we are familiar with your haiku.
We can’t wait to read your work!

Haiku is not a
shriek, a howl, a sigh, or a yawn; rather, it is the deep breath of life.

  1. Dear Ms. Quon and Ms. Rule,

Greetings for World Animal Month in the Seed Gathering Season! Congratulations to participating poets!

I appreciate your sharing my published haiku. It includes an all winter season word, kigo: winter or wintertime, fuyu 冬 (ふゆ) and seasonless topic, muki: window, mado 窓.

It was crafted in response to the prompt: the elements provided by Ms. Katherine E Winnick, editor of The Shadow Pond Journal.

The World Kigo Database by Dr. Gabi Greve, Daruma Museum, Japan, is my primary almanac (saijiki) for kigo and muki, and for translation of kigo and muki into English.

    Thank you for your consideration.

    Sincerely,

    Monica Kakkar
